01/15/2010

For English class, we were assigned to each lines in the epic poem,  Beowulf. I recored it with Garageband. It was really fun, though I couldn’t hear the final product of this project yet, to work together and make one big podcast about a book.

My 3rd Genre!!

01/15/2010

For English class, I made this with iMovie for the 3rd genre of Multi Genre Project. iMovie is a very useful program :] I took pictures with Nikon D90, shot many photos so that it looks like it’s moving. I tried to show the relationship between the use hybrid cars and saving polar bears.

It was really fun, and I liked the fact that we could escape from a boring essay and still send the message across. I hope that people enjoy my video!

Sorry for inconvenience; I couldn’t embed it.

Macbeth Thesis

01/11/2010

This is Macbeth Thesis I wrote for my English Class. It is part of final exam! I wrote this, and I realized that Macbeth is a human, and that opportunity never comes without price. I used PAGES in my macbook to write this.

Q: Does a position make a person change? Or does position change because a person change? In other word, did Macbeth change into a overconfident, cocky man because he became a king, or did he become a king because he changed into such man?

In Macbeth, Macbeth is influenced by the position and honor of being a king, and eventually change to a man that he was not; a man that is very cocky and overconfident of himself. His modesty which he was full of, is now nowhere to be found, and his timidity, which made him get scolded by his wife all the time, is nonexistent anymore. Also, the fact that Macbeth was still uncertain and timid to become a king right before the murder of Duncan shows that he wasn’t transformed before he became a king.

1st point: Comparing the before and after of Macbeth’s enthronement, Macbeth became less modest yet more cocky.

-Macbeth was modest. When he was told that he will be king and thane of cawdor, he didn’t believe it, as if he thinks that he doesn’t deserve such position.

2nd point: He, who was timid and passive before the enthronement, became overly brave and active as he became a king.

-The whole Act 1 Scene 7

3rd point: Macbeth loses conscience and

-The king has just honored me, and I have earned the good opinion of all sorts of people. I want to enjoy these honors while the feeling is fresh and not throw them away so soon

The introduction of my final essay:
Humans naturally thirst for power, and by the time people obtain a powerful position, they tend to be obsessed with keeping that power. Then, in William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth, did the title character change to be corrupt and obsessed with his position as a result of the enthronement, or did the enthronement come as a result of the change in his personality? Macbeth is a case of the former, and he changes as a consequence of a crown unjustly and unpredictably given to him by the witches.

Macbeth Performance Discussion

01/10/2010

This was done after the Macbeth Scene Performance. Jorma, Justin, Minhee, and Soho were in the team.

On January 8th, in Ms. Patterson’s English class, 4 of my friends and I performed a scene from Macbeth! We were assigned with 1.3, the scene where Macbeth and Banquo hear a prophecy that Macbeth will be a king. I was 3rd witch and Angus, Jorma 2nd witch and Ross, Soho was Banquo, Justin was Macbeth, and Minhee was 1st witch. We prepared as much as we can; meeting on Thursday and Friday lunchtime without having a lunch.

When performance started, we got our costumes, our “campfire” made with wooden chopstick and incense, prompts such as a knife and scroll, and got to our position. I told Jessica to help us with the music, and Suzie with the light.

The witches started the play, and we said our lines with weird voices and exaggerated actions. The witch part of the performance, in my opinion, went a bit worse than the practice ones, and I think it was because we were nervous. We forgot our lines time to time, and sometimes forgot to do some of the extra actions we added to make the play more fun.

Individually, Macbeth and Banquo did a great job with acting. They knew what they were saying, and were able to put emotions to their lines. Soho gave a passionate and heroic speech, and Macbeth, though he relied on a index card, was able to look confident and “Macbeth-like.” Witches, I don’t know how it looked from the audience, but were able to look like witches with a help from crazy costumes, and I think we acted like witches with weird voices and spooky laughs. We were going to kneel down as Ross and Angus to Macbeth and Banquo, but we forgot to because of the nervousness. We purposely tried to sound neutral and indifferent, since that is how the messengers should act like.

The mood of the play was the way we thought it would be. The light was off, the blinders were blocking the light, the music was playing a sad and dark tune and changed to a heroic, glorious, and bright song when Banquo and Macbeth came into play, and many other things contributed to the mood of the act.

I worked as a coordinator of the team and a member. It was hard, though our product made everything worthwhile. If I have another chance, I’d like to have another performance with different scene and different people!

Though it was decent, it didn’t reach our expectations. First of all, Macbeth should have memorized that script fully, since he is the main character and most important character that needed to give an emotional and powerful lines to the audience. But I understand that he had much more to memorize than other characters.  Also, if we had made background like that of Jihee’s castle, our scene could have been more attracting and appealing to the audience. Because there were computers, desks, and some posters in our background, it looked very unprofessional and unprepared. Also, we planned to get a fog-making machine, or dry ice to make misty environment, and if we had really gotten it, it must have looked much better.

Voicethread For Macbeth-

12/10/2009

In class and outside of class, Staci and I were assigned as a team to make a mind map of Macbeth. We set up legends for the each characters, and made a symbolic figures to describe the story and relationship between characters. I had so much fun making ideas with Staci! Enjoy!

My “BEST” Macbeth Reflection.. Enjoy :]

12/10/2009

This is a  refection we did for English class. We were to do this after reading an Act from Macbeth. I liked the fact that we were dived according to the gender and were able to compare each other’s difference in thoughts

Macbeth

Macbeth Reflection for Male

(If you are a MALE answer the following question) How has Macbeth transformed by the end of the play?

  • find two pieces of textual evidence from Act 5 to support your ideas
  • write a paragraph to explain each piece of textual evidence

By the end of the play, Macbeth has transformed into cocky and overly courageous and bold person. In the beginning, he was always weak when making decisions, and his mind was so capricious, that he was constantly scolded by Lady Macbeth for being always timid and preoccupied. But by the end of the play, Macbeth has changed to resemble Lady Macbeth, in terms of cruelty and blindness for power. When he is about to kill his friend, he is not stressed or nervous, but rather he naturally carries his plan without showing it in his face. In Act 3 Scene 2 Line 1209, he tells his wife Lady Macbeth that they need to murder Banquo and Fleance. He says, “O, full of scorpions in my mind! Thou know’st that Banquo, and his Fleance, lives.” Lady Macbeth thinks that there is no reason to kill Banquo, , and she says, “But in them nature’s copy’s not eterne” (3.2.1209), which means that they will die out natural due to age. Macbeth ignores this and carries his plan.
But didn’t Macbeth, in the beginning, tried to avoid killing people? He even said, “we will proceed no further in this business:/He hath honour’d me of late” (1.4.507), meaning that he can’t kill Duncan and that they should stop, to Lady Macbeth who has planned of kill Duncan! But now he is in level of planning a murder by himself, without Lady Macbeth’s aid! Recently, he’s been more eager than anyone else!
Also, Macbeth has turned into someone else in a way that he became cocky and bold. Facing a battle against thousands of well trained British soldiers, he is not scared, but rather too confident that he shall defeat the British, since he thinks he is invincible. He sticks to the witches’ half-true-prophecy, which went, “‘Fear not, Macbeth; no man that’s born of woman/ Shall e’er have power upon thee” (5.4.2251), and thinks that he will never die by a woman born man like Banquo. Mainly because he is a king now and that he has heard deceiving messages from the witches, he is now bolder and cockier!
Not only that, Macbeth is now taking care of Lady Macbeth, rather vice versa. Lady Macbeth is now the one who is mentally insecure and unstable (like Macbeth before), since she is now insane due to the guilt, and Macbeth is now who is stronger in mind. In Act 5 Scene 4, Line 2295, Macbeth states, “Cure her of that./Canst thou not minister to a mind diseased.” Note that he is in perfectly fine state of mind, and that he is sane. He is stronger mentally than ever.
This is how Macbeth changed; he became bolder, cockier, and he is now more cruel and ruthless, like Lady Macbeth before.
